Three Kilometres till the End of the World / Trei kilometri până la capătul lumii, the third feature film by Romanian actor turned director Emanuel Pârvu, was selected for the Competition, while the Romanian documentary Nasty, about the famous Romanian tennis player Ilie Năstase, directed by Tudor Giurgiu, Cristian Pascariu and Tudor D. Popescu, was eyed for the Special Screenings section.
Another Romanian production, Human Violins: Prelude (multi-user version) by Ioana Mischie is among the eight projects selected for the first edition of the Immersive Competition, showcasing the cutting edge of this new era in storytelling, challenging convention and embracing new technologies. The Best Immersive Work Award will be presented by the President of the Jury at the closing ceremony on 23 May 2024.
The French-Romanian actress Anamaria Vartolomei stars as Maria Schneider alongside Matt Dillon (as Marlon Brando) in Jessica Palud’s Maria (selected for Cannes Premiere), as well as in The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre De La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte (selected Out of Competition).
The Romanian presence in Cannes in 2024 will be completed by cinematographer Mihai Mălaimare, Jr.’s new collaboration with Francis Ford Coppola, Megalopolis, which had been previously announced in Cannes’ Competition, alongside Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, starring Romanian-born American actor Sebastian Stan and Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova.
Lithuanian animated film Flow directed by Gints Zilbalodis was added to the Un Regard section.
Croatian minority coproduction When the Light Breaks by Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson will open the Un Certain Regard section. The film was coproduced by MP Film on the part of Croatia, and it is a coproduction between Iceland, the Netherlands, France and Croatia.
The new additions to the Official Selection were announced by the Cannes Film Festival on 22 April 2024.
