WARSAW: In the first year of operation of the production support cash rebate system, the Polish Film Institute awarded over 13.2 m EUR / 57 m PLN to support 30 audiovisual projects. The budget of the scheme for 2020 is 25 m EUR / 108 m PLN.
WARSAW: The biggest Polish distribution success of 2019, the Oscar-nominated drama Corpus Christi from Jan Komasa, has been sold to over 50 territories including the UK, Scandinavia, France, Russia and Australia. It opened in North America on 19 February 2020, where it is showcased on over 80 screens, distributed by Film Movement.
WARSAW: 365 Days directed by Barbara Białowąs and Tomasz Mandes has got 1.25 m admissions since its opening on 7 February 2020. The erotic thriller is based on a bestselling novel series by Blanka Lipińska.
WARSAW: Katarzyna Klimkiewicz has finished shooting a biopic on Kalina Jędrusik, the iconic Polish actress and singer dubbed the Polish Marilyn Monroe. The film received support from the Mazovia Warsaw Film Commission.
WARSAW: Polish theatre and television director Jerzy Gruza, creator of many programmes and series, including Forty-year-old / Czterdziestolatek and Civil War / Wojna domowa, died on 16 February 2020 at the age of 87.
WARSAW: Jan Komasa’s Academy Award nominated drama Corpus Christi received 15 nominations for the Polish Film Awards - The Eagles, announced on 5 February 2020. The nominations include Best Film, Best Director and Best Script.
TORUŃ: The headquarters of the new Camerimage European Film Center is to be built in Toruń by 2025 as a joint investment of the National Treasury and the Municipality of Toruń. The investment is 181.5 EUR / 600 m PLN.
WARSAW: The third instalment of Władysław Pasikowski’s crime series Dogs tops the overall box office in Poland with 800,000 admissions, of which 400,000 admissions in its opening weekend. The film was released domestically by Kino Świat on 17 January 2020.
WARSAW: Polish private broadcaster Kino Polska plans to launch its own VOD service that would showcase its original content.
WARSAW: The Polish Film Institute granted over 12 m EUR to 16 national and 10 international projects as part of the incentive scheme that was introduced in Poland in February 2019. The call for applications is ongoing and the 2020 budget allocated to support audiovisual production is up to EUR 50,2 million.
