The National Programme of the 59th Pula Film Festival will be opened in the Arena on 21 July 2012 with Vlatka Vorkapic's romantic comedy Sonja and the Bull, produced by Interfilm. So far, eight films have been confirmed for the main section of the National Programme. Apart from the opening film there is also Krsto Papic's crime drama Flower Square, produced by Ozana film, the omnibus Zagreb Stories Vol. 2, produced by Propeler film, Goran Rukavina's drama Children of the Fall, produced by Corvus film, Arsen Anton Ostojic's drama Halima's Path, produced by Arkadena Zagreb, and Davor Žmegac's romantic comedy No Laughing Allowed, produced by the Croatian Radiotelevision. Two films already presented in the rest of Croatia will premiere in Pula: Igor Mirkovic’s melodrama Night Boats, produced by Studio dim, and Branko Schmidt’s thriller Cannibal Vegetarian, produced by Telefilm.

5 independent films waiting for public support

Apart from the eight films already mentioned, five independent films (films made outside Croatian Audiovisual Centre’s public call for proposals for funding for the promotion of audiovisual work for feature-length fiction film) have been invited for the main section of the National Programme. The Pula Film Festival Council has reached a decision to postpone the deadline for the application of films for the 59^th Pula Film Festival to 29 June. By that time the Croatian Audiovisual Centre will decide on their requests for co-financing. After receiving confirmations from producers, the Festival will announce their participation. The following films have been invited: Damir Cucic’s A Letter to my Father, produced by the Croatian Film Association, Dario Pleic’s It’s Not All About Money, produced by Interfilm, Jozo Patljak’s Accidental Passer-by, produced by Alka film, Hives,directed by five directors and produced by the Zagreb Academy of Dramatic Art and four other film academies, and a new version of Bella Biondina by late Daniel Marušic.

2 minority co-productions

Two co-productions with Serbia will be presented as part of the minority co-productions section – Bojan Vuletic’s Practical Guide to Belgrade with Singing and Crying, co-produced by Croatian Kinorama, and Srdjan Dragojevic’s The Parade, co-produced by Mainframe. Ilian Metev’s Sofia’s Last Ambulance, awarded at Cannes and co-produced by Croatian Nukleus film, will be presented outside of competition.

59th Pula International Programme 2012: dates & venues

The International Programme of the 59th Pula Film Festival shall start at the fortress Kastel (from Saturday 14 July to Friday 20 July 2012), with evening open-air screenings.

Films from the International Programme shall also be presented at the Valli Cinema during the whole duration of the Festival, from 14 till 28 July. During the second part of the Festival (21-28 July), films from the PoPular Programme shall be in the Arena after the completion of the National Programme. Satellite events screenings will take place until 30th July.

SUBMISSION OF FILMS TO THE INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME CLOSED

The deadline for submissions of films for the 59th Festival was 1 May 2012.
The programme will be seleceted and published in June.

Awards in the international programme

The International competition Jury will grant the following awards:

Golden Arena for the best leading actor/actress

Three special awards will be given for the best film in the International programme:

- Young Cinephiles Award

A Special Lifetime Achievement Golden Arena can be granted by the decision of the Festival Council. The first recipient of this award was the famous British actor Christopher Lee in 2008.

The first international film programme in the Arena was presented already in 1953 at the initiative of Marijan Rotar. After that, foreign film revues have occasionally took place as part of the Festival.

In 2001, a competition programme presenting European film was launched.

From 2004, films from all over the world have been screened as part of an international competition programme.
