The 19^th Adana Golden Boll Film Festival, to be held by the City Municipality of Adana from 17^th-23^rd September, will host the premiere of First Song: Song of the Wheat, a documentary that chronicles the formation of one of Turkish music’s iconic bands, Yeni Türkü, and the story behind the band’s debut album, ‘Song of the Wheat’. In addition to the screening, there will be a Q&A session on the Can Dündar directed documentary, followed by a live concert from Yeni Türkü, the band itself.

The 19^th Golden Boll Film Festival will be hosting the Turkish premieres of myriad outstanding national and international films. The Festival, due to run from 17^th-23^rd September, is organized by the City Municipality of Adana. One of the films to be screened for the first time in Turkey during the Festival is First Song: Song of the Wheat.

Directed by journalist, columnist and documentary filmmaker, Can Dündar, the film chronicles the formation of Yeni Türkü, one of Turkish music’s most creative bands, and the story behind the band’s eponymous debut album, ‘Song of the Wheat’. Producer and original score credits on the documentary go respectively to Zeyno Film and the former band member, Selim Atakan. First Song not only sheds light on the genesis of an album that has historic importance in Turkish music, it also has much to say about the status quo in Turkey during the late 1970s.

In the documentary, we are given a sense of the interplay between this period of recent Turkish history and a series of personal stories. The line-up of talking heads includes: former band members, Selim Atakan, Zerrin Atakan, Tuğrul Bayrak, Tuncer Tercan and Murat Buket; current band member, Derya Köroğlu; Mehmet Toker, guest musician on ‘Song of the Wheat’; writer and university lecturer, Yılmaz Aysan; musician, writer and university lecturer, Bülent Somay; poet, Yaşar Mıraç; musician, writer, columnist and filmmaker, Zülfü Livaneli; musician, Ayşe Tütüncü; and filmmaker, Hüseyin Karabey.

The premiere of First Song will take place held on Tuesday 18^th September at 15.00 in the Adana Municipal Theatre as part of the 19^th Golden Boll Film Festival. The film screening will be followed at 16.15 by a Q&A session with Can Dündar, Derya Köroğlu and Selim Atakan on the theme, ‘Yeni Türkü: Birth of a Band’. The band will then take the stage at 17.30.
