For the tenth Berlinale Co-Production Market (from February 10 to 12, 2013), 38 new feature-film projects and seven internationally renowned production companies have been selected to meet in Berlin with 450 potential co-production and financing partners.
Besides finding the perfect partners for the selected projects – which this year also include five projects developed at the first Berlinale Residency – the Berlinale Co-Production Market is expanding its Company Matching programme. This new format for meetings has evolved over the past two years. Here, a selection of internationally active production companies is presented that, despite their extensive experience and networks worldwide, are still keen on establishing new partnerships and exploring possibilities for collaborations. At these meetings, they will not present a specific film project, but are ready for an exchange on a structural, company level.
Due to the great demand in the past, seven renowned production companies (from Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, Norway and the Netherlands)have been selected to present themselves during this year’s Company Matching.
Project Director Sonja Heinen: “We would like to create a platform for companies to become acquainted and broaden their horizons – to go beyond thinking from just one project to the next. These meetings should, for instance, enable them to find partners with similar company philosophies and get feedback on new business ideas or even consider international alliances.”
This means that the participants of the Berlinale Co-Production Market may request 30-minute one-on-one meetings with the selected projects as well as with the selected companies. Before the Market opens, the Berlinale team will schedule over 800 meetings for the two days of the event.
The official selection for the Berlinale Co-Production Market 2013 includes 20 exciting new international fictional film projects, chosen from 318 entries, for potential co-production and financing partners to explore. These projects will be presented by their experienced producers, who have already secured at least 30% of the financing in place. All of the projects have budgets between one and 13 million euros.
In conjunction with CineMart Rotterdam, three more projects have been chosen for the “Rotterdam-Berlinale Express”. They will participate in both the CineMart and the Berlinale Co-Production Market.
This year’s selection includes projects by internationally established directors, such as Søren Kragh-Jacobsen, Lucrecia Martel and György Palfy, as well as by filmmakers whose debut films screened successfully in recent years, such as Emin Alper, Phan Dang Di and Asli Özge.
Among the partners available for meetings with participating producers, world sales agents, distributors, TV-broadcasters, funders and financiers at the Berlinale Co-Production Market are also feature-film projects by five directors who took part in the first edition of the Berlinale Residency programme this past autumn and developed scripts during their four-month stay in Berlin: Matías Bize from Chile, Rebecca Daly from Ireland, Raya Martin from the Philippines, Rafi Pitts from Iran, and Sacha Polak from the Netherlands. All of these filmmakers had previously presented works at the Berlinale or at other international A-category festivals. Together with their producers, they will now present their new projects.
In addition, ten very promising projects by newcomers have been selected for the “Talent Project Market” from an additional 212 entries. In what has proven to be a successful cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus, this eventprepares young producers and directors for the international market, and arranges meetings with potential partners.
Festival Director Dieter Kosslick is delighted with the Berlinale Co-Production Market’s achievements over the past ten years: “Since 2004, more than 140 films have been developed from earlier projects. A success rate of over 40% is truly impressive and we hope that this year will again foster many great new partnerships, and result in exciting films that find their way to the screen and to audiences.”
The main partners of the Berlinale Co-Production Market are MDM – Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung and the European Union’s MEDIA Programme.
The Berlinale Co-Production Market is part of the European Film Market.
The Berlin House of Representatives – situated directly across from the European Film Market in the Martin-Gropius Bau – will again cooperate with the Co-Production Market as both partner and venue.
