Contribution to World Cinema Award will be received by Godfrey Reggio

Reggio, a New Orleans native, has not created many films in his more than thirty-year long career in documentary filmmaking – yet, four feature films have easily earned him worldwide fame. In Reggio’s films, the clash of urbanism with the Third World arises without a single word, but from the tension of individual images, sounds and music. „The role of film is to provoke, ask questions which can be answered exclusively by its audience.“ Godfrey Reggio will personally receive the Contribution to World Cinema Award, and apart from his retrospective a Masterclass will be held where he will present his auteur method. Moreover, Jihlava IDFF will be also visited by his colleagues Ray Hemenez and Francis Kuipers. And last but not least, Reggio will recall his collaboration with the Czech filmmaker Miroslav Janek who used to work on Reggio’s films as an editor.

Joseph Cheng belongs to the founders of democratic movements in Hong Kong in the 1980s, when the country was ruled by the United Kingdom. However, nowadays his name has become famous in connection with the Occupy Central Movement and the so-called Umbrella Revolution. He can share his own experience about the protests against the Beijing government, about the political transformation of Hong Kong after having been handed over to China, but also about the best way to understand one’s own culture, as Cheng also participated in the creation of several journals and associations studying Asian society and culture.

Jihlava IDFF discovering independent Burmese film

Documentary filmmaker and lecturer Vít Janeček has been interested in Burmese film for a long time. He personally prepared a unique section of contemporary independent Burmese film. It provides an exceptional opportunity to learn about this virtually unknown part of film. Independent film has flourished in Burma for about ten years, and its masterpieces will be screened in Jihlava IDFF. The Burmese programme will be held on a single day, on Tuesday 28th October, and it is no coincidence that it is also the date of the foundation of the independent Czechoslovak state. The Czechoslovak-Burmese relationships used to be quite friendly in the past. And nowadays, the two films are connected again. There are Burmese students studying at The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, and Janeček would like to shoot a film about the Czechoslovak traces in Burma.
