He died 20 years ago, on 13 March 1996, of a heart attack during a heart operation. On this year’s 27 June he would have celebrated his 75th birthday. In remembrance of his great oeuvre he was chosen to be the patron of the year 2016 by the Polish Film Academy: Krzysztof Kieślowski, one of the best film directors of the 20th century.
In collaboration with Cineplexx International, the Polish Institute in Vienna and the Polish Film Institute, the LET’S CEE Film Festival recollects the director’s greatest moments and presents the film retrospective Krzysztof Kieślowski 75/20. Eight of the film screenings will be followed by moderated discussions with legendary civil rights attorney and screenwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz, who was alongside Kieślowski himself responsible for delivering the outlines for most of his feature films and, thus, made film history. Book author and screenwriter Stanisław Zawiśliński will be present for a Q&A after the documentary Still Alive. A Film about Krzysztof Kieślowski.
The film series will be opened with the documentary Still Alive. A film about Krzysztof Kieślowski (directed by Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz, 2005), not only featuring Kieślowski himself, but also his favourite actors Jerzy Stuhr, Grażyna Szapołowska and Juliette Binoche, film composer Zbigniew Preisner, camera operator Sławomir Idziak and many more companions, followed by the master piece The Double Life of Véronique (1991) – a metaphysical drama starring Irène Jacob in the lead role. Further obligatory dates for cineastes include the screenings of the two cinema versions of the legendary TV show Dekalog – A Short Film About Killing (1988) and A Short Film About Love (1988) – as well as the multiply awarded, internationally coproduced Three Colors trilogy (1993-1994) with Irène Jacob, Julie Delpy and Juliette Binoche in the cast. The retrospective, further introducing the features The Scar (1976), Camera Buff(1979), No End (1985) and Blind Chance (1987) in the programme, will be complemented by the documentary Krzysztof Kieślowski: I’m So-So… (directed by Krzysztof Wierzbicki, 1996), a fascinating talk with the famous director about his life and works.
All films will be shown for the first time in Austria as digitally restored original versions with English subtitles. Nine screenings will be followed by a Q&A.
