The 2nd edition of this event kicks-off with a screening of the film Afterimage (Poland, 2016), directed by Andrzej Wajda. During BUZZ CEE, the audience will be able to enjoy special screenings, in the presence of the actors and directors, films enrolled in the competition, the Nae Caranfil restrospective and many more.
Imaginea de apoi / Afterimage (Poland, 2016) is the latest masterpiece of one of the most prominent masters in the history of cinematography, Andrzej Wajda. The topic of this film, finished before the author’s passing, completes the great European director’s work. The story of Władysław Strzemiński, the most significant Polish painter of the 20th century, offers a parallel with his own destiny. The film carries a lot of echoes and references to the contemporary spirit of the Polish society and the post-communist world in general. The film will screen after the opening ceremony of BUZZ CEE, today, starting with 19:30, in the George Ciprian Theater Hall in Buzău.
During the Buzău International Film Festival – BUZZ CEE competition, the audience will be able to watch the finalists – 30 screenings from 17 countries from Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, including Greece, Turkey and Israel. The festival aims to promote quality productions from the region and to bring to Buzău films that rarely get to the big screens in Romania, offering the audience the possibility to come into contact with the Central and South-Eastern European cinema.
The jury is composed of professionals from the cinema industry in Romania and Europe, and is divided into three sections: feature film, short film & student film and documentary film. The feature film section is judged by Maria Obretin, the lead in Nae Caranfil’s most recent production, 9.6 pe scara Richter (Ro, Bg, Hu, 2016), the closing film of the festival, Irina Margareta Nistor, the voice of the video tapes, who will also participate in the special screening of the documentary Chuck Norris vs. Communism (Ro, UK, Ger., 2015) and Maria Hengge (Germany), the winner of the Long BUZZ award, during the first edition of BUZZ CEE, with the production SIN & ILLY STILL ALIVE.
The Documentary section’s jury is made of George Kalomenopoulos, Laura Carmen Baron and Hans-Stefan Heyne (Germany). In 2012, Hans-Stefan Heyne set the foundations of his own company, “International Media Consult & Business Services”, which focuses on financing and co-financing documentary features, acquisitions and sales contracts, legal aspects and management of rights and licenses. Laura Carmen Baron is one of the most appreciated professors in the Multimedia and Film department of the UNATC “I.L. Caragiale” in Bucharest, and George Kalomenopoulos is the founder of 2K Films, director, producer and consultant for numerous feature films, documentaries and TV shows, and co-producer for several prize-winning international projects.
For the Short Film and Student Film sections, BUZZ CE has selected a joint jury, composed of Mihai Bauman, George Mihalcea and Andreea Vasile. Mihai Bauman is a director, experienced in documentary
films and television. His short films have been selected in festivals in Romania, Germany, Switzerland, Argentina, Greece etc. He has directed shows and series for the TV stations Antena 1 and HBO. Andreea Vasile has one of the titular parts in the successful TV show Shadows, produced by HBO Romania. She also plays a main role in the Tudor Giurgiu’s film, Why me? (which had its international premiere during the Berlin Film Festival). George Mihalcea, the third member in the jury for Short Film and Student Film, is a voice well known to Romanians, who get to listen to him on Radio Guerilla. He is also the author of a short prose volume, În mijlocul lucrurilor (2014), published by Trei publishing house.
Special screenings at BUZZ CEE International Film Festival will showcase Ana Ularu and Manuela Hărăbor, Nae Caranfil and Ismail Demirci (known to the public from the show Kosem) to the audience. The integral of the great Romanian director Nae Caranfil’s movies will be presented during BUZZ CEE in a chronological order, starting with E pericoloso spongersi (Ro, 1993), and closing with his most recent production, 9.6 pe scara Richter (RO, B, HU, 2016), which will take place in the presence of the director and the protagonist, Maria Obretin.
During each edition, the organisers point out productions created by women directors in Central and South Eastern Europe, in the non-competitional section BUZZ Women. The audience will be able to watch the feature film Dublu, directed by Catrinel Dănăiaţă (Romania, 2016), the documentary Blocul (Romania – Great Brittain, 2016), directed by Maria Salaru and several short films from the region.
