In less than two months, in Bydgoszcz, the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography CAMERIMAGE will celebrate its 25th anniversary. For this special edition, which will be held between 11th and 18th November 2017, the organizers are assembling a wide variety of attractions and surprises. It will enable us to reminisce the way the Festival has developed from its humble beginnings in Toruń to its current rank of a prestigious international film event. It will also allow us to ponder over the path for the following years. One of such special events will be a unique exhibition, the first one in Europe, of the artistic endeavors of David Lynch, a distinguished film and television auteur and a prolific creator working in different areas of art and culture, as well as Camerimage’s longtime friend. David Lynch will be the honorary guest of the Festival’s 25th edition and will attend the SILENCE AND DYNAMISMexhibition grand opening on November 12th in the Centre of Contemporary Art “Znaki Czasu” in Toruń.
David Lynch is one of the most beloved modern filmmakers, while his films kindle the imagination of people from all over the world. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where, at the age of twenty, he started to create his first animated short films, ultimately igniting a passionate lifelong romance with film. He astonished the world with his feature debut Eraserhead, next came The Elephant Man, Dune, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, Lost Highway, The Straight Story, Mulholland Dr., and Inland Empire. For his work as film director, screenwriter and producer he was nominated to four Academy Awards®, won Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or, and was honored with two César Awards, among many others. In 2000, he came to Poland for the first time to accept the Camerimage Award to Director with Unique Visual Sensitivity. Since then, David Lynch has visited the festival a number of times, presenting not only his films but also paintings, photographs and lithographs.
The exhibition of David Lynch's artistic explorations will definitely be an intriguing event. His work is diverse even within the area of filmmaking: he created feature and experimental films, TV series, videoarts, commercials, and music videos. But David Lynch is also a brilliant painter, graphic artist, photographer, as well as music composer and performer. The exhibition, which the Camerimage 2017 organizers cordially invite you to, will be the biggest presentation of David Lynch's artistic output to date. In the Centre of Contemporary Art “Znaki Czasu” in Toruń (approx. 40km from Bydgoszcz, where Camerimage takes place), the Festival organizers will present around 400 of Lynch's works: from his earliest sketching explorations from 1950s, through his painting/film inspirations from 1960s to his latest works from 2017.
Marek Żydowicz, the director of Camerimage, is the exhibition’s curator, while the event will be coordinated by the Tumult Foundation, Camerimage organizer, and the Centre of Contemporary Arts “Znaki Czasu” in Toruń, with the help of the World Art Foundation, which, incidentally, was co-founded by David Lynchhimself. The exhibition is co-financed by the City of Toruń and the Polish Film Institute.
It will be open until 18th February 2018. This retrospective demonstration of David Lynch’s creations – including pieces from both the artist’s personal collection and American, French and German art galleries – will include oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, lithographs, photographs, music pieces, commercials, short films, and music videos.
