New Section: goEast Bioskop // Specials: Guest Appearance by Wajda School & Studio // Photo Exhibition “Swimming Pool”
goEast – Festival of Central and Eastern European Film continues to evolve in 2018 with a new section, goEast Bioskop: “With the new section, we intend to show great cinematic art without the pressure of having to secure national premieres, whether it be mainstream or auteur cinema – variety, diversity and originality are in the focus here,” as festival director Heleen Gerritsen explains. In the scope of the goEast Specials, the School Film Days and traditional Sunday Matinee promise compelling entertainment. In addition, the Wajda School & Studio from Warsaw will be making a guest appearance at the festival. This year goEast will once again feature an exhibition in its accompanying program: works by Slovak photographer Mária Švarbová will be on display during the festival in the AtriumGalerie of the SV SparkassenVersicherung in Wiesbaden.
Bioskop
Bioskop (from the Greek: bios = life, skopein = to see, to watch) is the name of the film projection device developed by the Berlin-born Skladanowsky brothers, which caused a stir back in 1895 and represents one of the milestones of nascent European film culture. The new goEast section of the same name is dedicated to seeking out new impulses in Eastern European cinema. Contemporary works from renowned filmmakers, festival highlights and genre films – from Slovak mafia saga to Kirghiz musical – will all be paying a visit to Wiesbaden. The goEast audience can look forward to entertaining, amusing, dark and quirky films that have till now remained undiscovered in the West, including the historical space travel film SALYUT 7 (RUS, 2017) by Klim Shipenko and the wild dashcam compilation DOROGA (THE ROAD MOVIE, BLR, 2016) by Dmitrii Kalashnikov. goEast is particularly proud of being able to show the latest work of animation legend Jan Švankmajer: HMYZ (INSECTS, CZK/SVK, 2018) will be celebrating its Germany premiere in Wiesbaden. The director insisted that his film is shown out of competition.
Specials
The goEast School Film Days will take place on 19 and 20 April at Wiesbaden’s CaligariFilmbühne cinema. Students from the surrounding area will get to know Central and Eastern European cinema and receive guidance in critical interaction with the medium of film. As in previous editions, they will be supported in this regard by experts from Medienzentrum Wiesbaden. This year’s program includes Iveta Grófová’s award-winning literary adaptation PIATA LOD (LITTLE HARBOUR, SVK/CZE/HUN, 2017). 11-year-old lead actress Vanessa Szamuhelová is expected to be on hand for a Q&A. In addition, the School Film Days will include a colourful short film program featuring inspiring stories, vivid characters and vibrant animation.
A special program by Warsaw’s Wajda School & Studio guarantees further highlights. goEast is presenting works by graduates of the master school – including Academy Award winner JOANNA (2013) by Aneta Kopacz and KOMUNIA (COMMUNION, 2016) by Anna Zamecka, which was honoured with the European Film Award in 2017.
Photo Exhibition “Swimming Pool”
This year’s goEast Visual combines Wiesbaden’s spa culture with young, hip Eastern Europe. The central theme is derived from a work by Slovak photographer Mária Švarbová from her series “Swimming Pool”. A partial selection of photographs from this series will be exhibited at the AtriumGalerie of the SV SparkassenVersicherung from 16 to 30 April. Švarbová was born in Slovakia in 1988; her works are notable for their juxtapositions of aesthetically well-composed opposites that combine to form dense atmospheres. Mária Švarbová drew inspiration for this series from the communist swimming pools of her childhood. Her photographs have already been featured in The Guardian, Vogue and Cosmopolitan and exhibited around the world – though not in Germany up until now.
