FEBIOFEST 2020 FOCUSES ON QUALITY FILM

The 27th edition of Febiofest - one of Slovakia’s biggest and longest-running film festivals – is almost here! Now called FEBIOFEST Bratislava International Film Festival the event will run from 11 to 17 March 2020. Lumière and Mladosť cinemas will host the main festival programme, with accompanying events – concerts and parties - at the legendary V-klub. And as we’re Focused on quality film the festival will offer a wide range for cinephiles as well as general audiences of various genres.

All-festival Cinepass holders can visit screenings at the best price and get free access to accompanying V-klub events. Cinepasses are available from the MyCinepass website.

“As a quickly-growing capital city, Bratislava needs one main representative film festival. With its tradition, exciting films, and extensive industry programme for film professionals, Febiofest has all the qualities to be this key event,” says Ondrej Starinský, Febiofest’s new artistic director.

Febiofest aims to bring Slovak audiences high-quality films from prestigious international film festivals, and the latest screenings from Slovakia and Czechia. It has exceptional guests, a strong and interesting industry programme, a competition of short films that reflects the latest issues in Central Europe, and aims to attract new cinema audiences.

Febiofest is envisioned as an ambitious urban film festival that embraces diverse film genres to reach out to viewers of diverse age groups that love quality cinema. For 2020 JANDL advertising agency has given the festival a fresh and vibrant new look.

“This new visual identity will appeal to our loyal followers and also attract new visitors to the festival – since we are targeting quality film as well as new cinemagoers,” says Ľubica Orechovská, Febiofest’s new executive director.

Over seven days, this year’s Febiofest will screen over one hundred fantastic films. These will include new Slovak films that have caught attention at distinguished festivals such as Berlinale and Rotterdam, remarkable award-winning foreign films that can’t be seen in regular Slovak distribution, an international competition of short films, classic works of cinema, night-time screenings, and an extensive programme for children. Many of these films will be screened in Slovakia for the first time.

The focal point of the festival programme is In the Heart of Europe - an international competition of short films that features fiction, documentaries and animation up to 30 minutes from the V4 countries, Austria and (for the first time) Ukraine. Viewers who favour time-proven films by award-winning directors will enjoy the Film + and Masters screening sections. Febio’s most popular section Slovakia - A Country of Film screens premieres of new Slovak cinema. Mirror of the Past shows recently digitalised Slovak and Czech cinema masterpieces, as well as internationally acclaimed classics including David Lynch and David Cronenberg. Limitless and Kino-Ikon+ are arthouse sections focusing on documentaries, film experimentation, and cinema that challenges conventional limits. Planet Dark is the spooky place for horror films and late-night screenings. Febiofest’s special kids’ programme will bring an even bigger and better Children´s Film Cabinet. The opportunity for networking between local producers and international film professionals is provided by Industry Days, which presents the ten most anticipated Slovak film projects in production to foreign film festival representatives.

A key aspect of Febiofest is reaching out across Slovakia – and by so doing, increasing its film-loving fanbase outside Bratislava. Four films have been selected from the main festival programme to be screened in 15 Slovak towns.
