“It will be a privilege to be with our audience who have supported and looked forward to the festival throughout these months of isolation. We are prepared to apply all protection measures adopted by authorities for open-air screenings, and we hope that the measures for screenings in movie theaters will be confirmed shortly,” explained Transilvania IFF President Tudor Giurgiu.
Outdoor screenings will be organized in various locations in Cluj, in clearly delineated spaces, with chairs set apart. Access will be permitted through designated aisles that will allow for triage. Screenings in theaters will be planned only after local authorities adopt the necessary measures for cinemas in line with most European guidelines that permit up to 50 percent occupancy rates.
Some 150 features will be screened during the festival, from the usual slate of around 200. “We started off the year with so many ideas for new programs, but as the size of the festival will have to be reduced this year, we will keep some of those ideas for next year, when hopefully things return to normal. But we can promise an eclectic selection of new titles and archival retrospectives, a traditional thematic section, national focuses, exceptional documentaries, special events and programs, as well as a good dose of unmitigated fun” promised Transilvania IFF Artistic Director Mihai Chirilov.
A selection of these titles will also be made available online simultaneously, in Romania, on Transilvania IFF’s streaming platform TIFF Unlimited (unlimited.tiff.ro). The platform experienced an intense growth during the isolation period, becoming an important alternative for the audiences in Romania. On June 6, TIFF Unlimited celebrates 1 year of existence. The platform currently offers more than 120 independent, awarded films, some of them from the festival’s portfolio.
Some of the Transilvania IFF projects will be adapted to the current context: the industry mainstay Transilvania Pitch Stop will have both online and offline components. The organizing details depend on the availability of selected participants (to be announced soon), decision makers and industry professionals to travel to Cluj.
The festival is supported by the Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme and is accredited by the FIAPF. In 2019, Transilvania IFF sold 95.000 tickets and had more than 1000 guests. Some of the recent guests are Nicolas Cage, Fanny Ardant, Alain Delon, Sophia Loren.
