Silent Film Festival online with "live" music - virtual cinema in Krakow (Kino Pod Baranami)

Fundacja dla Kina and Kino Pod Baranami present the 21st edition of the Silent Film Festival - which will be held online on e-kinopodbaranami.pl platform. All featured films will be filled with nostalgia and melancholy. The home screens will be filled with great silent cinema stars, such as Marlena Dietrich, Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino, Lyda Borelli, Pola Negri and Emil Jannings. Some of the films will be shown with concerts, performed by artists representing different musical styles.

Although traditional cinemas are still closed, the youngest, virtual Kino Pod Baranami’s auditorium is open to viewers from all over Poland. Therefore e-kinopodbaranami.pl platform will host the 21. Silent Film Festival this year. The formula of the event changed, but its quality remains the same. Just like in the previous years, the Festival focuses on the phenomenon of silent cinema and its program includes a number of astonishing films accompanied by specially prepared music.

The theme of this year's edition, although planned many months ago, proved to be almost prophetic. The prevailing pandemic makes us think, more often than before, on the essence of our existence.

Some of the films inspire us to reflect on the status of man in the world. Marcel L'Herbier, one of the masters of French film impressionism, captures the complexity of human experience in Man of the Open Seas. The power of the sea is the key element of August Blom’s Atlantis, which depicts a sinking ship – very similar to Titanic, which sinked a year before. The theme of the uneven struggle with nature is shown in an engaging documentary The Great White Silence, which consists of the footage gathered by Herbert G. Ponting during Captain Robert Falcon Scott's tragic expedition to the South Pole. The concept of human fate is in the center of The Last Laugh, directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. It is a moving story about a degraded doorkeeper, who changes an elegant ligature into an ordinary outfit of a hotel toilet worker.

Silent melodramas are full of melancholic glances. The long list of great stars, who act in this kind of films, begins with Marlena Dietrich, who shows her wonderful acting talent in The Woman One Longs For. In Beyond the Rocks melodrama, Gloria Swanson - well known for her iconic role in Sunset Boulevard – involves herself in a complicated relationship with Rudolph Valentino. Meanwhile, popular Italian actress Lyda Borelli, in Flower of Evil, plays the role of a young girl deprived of any hope for the better future. Also The Polish Dancer - the only Polish film with Pola Negri that has survived to this day – is filled with tragedy, alongside with revenge and passion. A spectacular (in every meaning of this word) love story is told in Shiraz: A Romance of India - a dazzling and impressive blockbuster, inspired by the famous monument of timeless love: the Indian Taj Mahal.

Films presented during the Festival are connected by melancholy - understood as a look into the past, filled with gentle sorrow. An atmospheric journey through time is provided by the screening of A Dream about Old Krakow, containing images of the city from the early 20th century. On the screen: beautiful as always Krakow's Planty and snow-covered Lasek Wolski. Bill Morrison, a visual artist, known for his use of found footage technique, provides the viewers with an original take on American history. His Dawson City. Frozen Time is an epic film, based almost exclusively on archives, about the gold rush, set-up of baseball matches, beautiful Canadian nature, genesis of Donald Trump's fortune and... the birth of the cinema. An interesting story about the beginnings of film is also told in the documentary Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché, made in 2018. A film brings back the memory of the forgotten pioneer of silent cinema, who (as a director, screenwriter or producer) co-created nearly a thousand different productions.

Since the beginning of its existence, the Silent Film Festival refers to the film screenings from the early 20th century, which were accompanied with live music. This year, selected titles will be completed by concerts recorded especially for the virtual edition of the Festival. Two quartets will perform: Maciej Trifonidis, Joachim Mencel, Stanislaw Jan Klemens Slowinski and Marek "Smok" Rajss (to the film Beyond the Rocks) and Wassim Ibrahim, Kamil Kruk, Tomas Celis Sanchez, Ethan Smith (Man of the Open Sea). Musical scores to films will be presented also by: Pruski (A Dream about Old Krakow), duo Sza/Za (Flower of Evil) and the SARAPATA brothers (The Last Laugh).

Some of the films will be available with ready-made music by renowned artists, such as Grammy winner Włodek Pawlik (The Polish Dancer), American Robert Israel (Atlantis), jazz virtuoso Pascal Schumacher (The Woman One Longs For), sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar (Shiraz: A Romance of India) and Simon Fisher Turner (The Great White Silence).

The main screenings of the festival will take place on December 4-6, but most of the festival titles will remain available until December 10.

Films are available at www.e-kinopodbaranami.pl (only in Poland).
