Set in a remote Romanian village, the film explores the complex relationship between two sisters raised by their strict grandmother. When the elder sister is forced into marriage, the younger
sister's jealousy and emotional turmoil lead her to seek solace in the village priest, who becomes her only refuge.
Director's Statement:
"In Romania, sexual education is rarely addressed, especially in rural areas where physical and spiritual intimacy remain taboo. Through this film, I explore the delicate relationship between
faith and intimacy, both physical and spiritual. The family depicted is far from ideal: the parents have abandoned their children to work abroad, leaving them in the care of grandparents or other relatives. This generational conflict arises as the elderly find it difficult to adapt to modern times, holding onto different values shaped by their upbringing. In this context, the priest’s role
becomes a sanctuary— a place free of judgment, offering only support." – Octavian Saramet, Director.
Producer's Statement:
"We need more bold films in Romanian cinema that address these crucial issues. Through 'Fine' we hope to raise awareness about themes that are not often discussed, shedding light on this sensitive subject and sparking a conversation. We aim to reach a broader audience and inspire change within Romania." – Mara Cracaleanu, Producer.
The selection of "FINE" at the Torino Film Festival highlights the exploration of original themes and subjects, reaffirming once again the narrative strength of Romanian cinema.
