Gdynia Polish Film Festival Competition Spotlight: Reverse

Reverse, the Gdynia competition debut feature from Borys Lankoszm, explores the wicked side of the female nature.

{mosimage}A dark comedy,Reverse is the story of Sabina, a thirty-year-old woman whose life is missing male companionship. This situation deeply worries her mother, who tries to find her daughter an eligible candidate for marriage. The whole situation is overseen by an eccentric grandmother, who can see through any secret. The tenement house, where the three women live, is visited by consecutive admirers, but no one catches Sabina's interest. Suddenly one day, a mysterious man named Bronisław appears out of nowhere and causes a series of surprising events, that uncover the wicked side of the women. The movie is set in two time frames, one in the 1950's and the other showing the contemporary life of Sabina and her son Michał.

Reverse is a debut cinema feature for Borys Lankosz, a graduate of the National Film School in Lodz. His diploma project titled Rozwój (Development, 2001) was awarded at several film festivals including the Golden Gate Award in San Francisco and the Silver Dragon at the Cracow Film Festival. His film making experience includes several television feature and documentary series as well as movies. The script was written by Andrzej Bart, one of the most interesting modern Polish writers.

{mosimage} The picture was shot in Warsaw between February and May 2009. To compose the visual side of Reverse, the filmmakers used oil paintings by Joanna Różnowicz-Wisławska. DoP is Marcin Koszałka, a renowned Polish cinematographer awarded both locally and internationally, who worked on such titles as The Streaks (Pręgi) and Sleepiness (Senność) by Magdalena Piekorz, and Scratch by Michał Rosa.

Reverse brings together a unique female trio of actresses. Sabina is played by Agata Buzek, one of the most praised younger Polish actresses. She is joined by two acting legends of Polish cinema, Krystyna Janda as the mother and Anna Polony as the grandmother. "The proposal to play the mother in Reverse was especially tempting considering the script, the topic, the genre, the director about whom I could say a lot of great things, the cinematographer who is an exceptional artist but also, and maybe firstly because of the closest partners in the movie: Anna Polony, whose craft I've admired over the years and Agata Buzek, whom I've been watching for a couple of seasons now with great interest," Krystyna Janda said in a statement.

{mosimage}The film is produced by Studio Filmowe KADR (www.kadr.com.pl) in co-production with The Documentary and Feature Films Studio (www.wfdif.com.pl, WFDiF) and Syrena Films (www.syrenafilms.com), an experienced Polish distribution company debuting as a film producer. Jerzy Kapuściński, the Director of studio Filmowe KADR pointed out the significance of this project in a special statement: "Reverse is a very important experience for KADR. After 14 years we are coming back to Polish cinematography as a feature film producer. This movie goes back to the wonderful traditions of KADR, a crew led by one of the most renowned Polish cinema authors - Jerzy Kwalerowicz. This tradition includes the debuts of the most promising Polish directors of the young generation. The literary script also plays a major role here. Equally significant for KADR movies are the form, style and the language of the film. I hope that Reverse, fulfills all these criteria characterizing the former KADR's movies, a crew that created the Polish Film School," he commented.

Reversewill open in Polish cinema on November 20, 2009.
