FESTIVALS: NO. 1 Grabs the Bulgarian Golden Rose Award

    VARNA, BULGARIA: The 30th Golden Rose Bulgarian National Film Festival (7-13 October 2011) delivered the Best Feature Film "Golden rose" award to Atanas Hristoskov's debut film NO. 1. The president of the jury, writer Boyan Biolchev said the "decision was unanimous and the film was chosen because of its strong message against violence and sensibility towards emerging spiritual ghettos."

    Jury member and Bulgarian director Stefan Komandarev praised NO. 1 as highly convincing with quality of script, images and acting. Philip Avramov, who plays the role of the literature teacher in NO. 1 and also performs in Sneakers, was awarded Best Actor. Sneakers received the Special Prize of the town of Varna.

    Love.net received three awards: best first feature film for Ilian Djevelekov; best script for Neli Dimitrova, Matey Konstantinov and Ilian Djevelekov; and best actress for Lilia Maraviglia. Konstantin Bojanov received the best director prize for his film Ave and Julian Atanassov was named best cinematographer for his work in Kamen Kalev's The Island.

    The best short film prize went to Alexander Etimov's Demons for its "skilful fusion of image and implied meaning in a unique film expression." The audience award went to Operation-Shmenti Capelli by Ivan Mitov and Vladislav Karamfilov-Vargala, and the Faculty of Journalism and Media Communications by the St. Kliment Ohridski (http://www.uni-sofia.bg/) Sofia University went to Alexo Petrov's Baklava. The Union of the Bulgarian Film Makers (www.sbfd.bg) gave its Special award to Old Toughies by deceased director Plamen Masslarov and his co-director Ivaylo Penchev and the Union's Film Critics Section awarded Yassen Grigorov's Little-Big. For their shorts Shopping and Pawnshop Dimitar Kotsev-Shosho and Neshka Karadjinska received two special mentions each. The Special Award of the National Film Centre (www.nfc.bg) for outstanding contribution and artistic presence was delivered to actor Boris Loukanov, who also plays an important role in Holy Light.
