Producer Borough Film received over 600,000 Euro from the Bulgarian National Film Center and 15,000 Euro from Bulgarian National Television in a presale of the film. Magic Shop, owned by DoP Georgi Nikolov, is Borough Film’s national coproducer.
“The Sinking of Sozopolis is a metaphorical story. It is about how a sea engulfs a city because people stopped loving each other. But most of all, it is about small and charming Sozopol, sharing the specific atmosphere of all the seaside towns in the region. In the past, they used to have an inseparable bond with the sea. Therefore the shoot had to take place on the Black Sea shore and most of all in Sozopol,” Bonev told FNE.
Bonev said the main character Chavo is “a man who has lost his natural impulses and has turned himself and his life into a system of conventions. For that reason, Sozopol is a kind of nostalgic Utopia for him.”
The six week shoot took place in October and November 2013 including a week of underground shooting with four actors involved. “Despite the relatively low temperatures and cold water Deyan Donkov, Vassil Giurov, Stefan Valdobrev and leonid Iovchev performed bravely,” Bonev added.
Popular alternative musician Vassil Giurov, who makes his acting debut in the film, will compose a song, working with composer Nikolay Ivanov, one of Bonev’s closest collaborators. Editing is expected to be completed by the end of May 2014.
