Vitkova, who most recently pitched the film at Transilvania Pitch Stop, described the concept of the film as “three moments of loss in the life of a family.” The first character is Raya, a young woman who literally lives with an elephant in her home, there to help her overcome the sadness of the loss of a man she loved. Raya’s father claims Bulgaria was the site of the Garden of Eden, and dreams of his dead wife as a young Eve. Raya’s nephews must face the New Year’s Eve announcement of their parents’ divorce.
Vitkova said the original budget was 1.6 m EUR, but because “it’s really impossible to find such money,” it was pared back to 1.12 m EUR.
Vitkova’s debut film Viktoria was the first ever Bulgarian film to be screened at Sundance, where it had its premiere. She was a 2014 European Film Promotion Producer on the Move and a 2017 EAVE participant.
