District league - Pepik Hnatek's Last Stand has been in first place at the Czech box office for its first three weeks. The film, based on a popular TV series broadcast on CME (www.cmegroup.com) station Nova TV, took in 37 million CZK with 287,000 admissions (debuting on 103 screens) in three weeks.
The dark comedy about a provincial football (soccer) team was produced by CME's MediaPro Pictures, with 40% of its funding coming from product placement, sponsorship and rebates.
In the film, the title character - an eccentric football coach - is preparing to undergo a heart transplant, which he keeps secret from his team and his wife. The series and film are also known under the title Sunday League.
Writer/director Jan Prušinovskýalso directed the TV series.
