In his €1 million drama, Šulík retells the tragedy of Hamlet through a young Roma man in a conflict with racial, social, and cultural prejudice and the unwritten laws of his own Roma community, which eventually drive him to murder.
Gypsy was coproduced by the director's own company Titanic, Slovak Television (www.stv.sk) and the Czech Republic's IN Film (www.infilm.cz) owned by Slovak producer Rudolf Biermann. It received funding from both the Slovak and Czech film funds.
Gypsy made a big splash with its world premiere at the Kavlovy Vary IFF (www.kviff.cz) winning the Special Jury Prize with a cash award of 20,000 USD (which the director and producer donated to the Romany community) and a special mention for the young Romany lead actor, Jan Mizigar. The film was nominated as Slovakia's entry for the Academy Award as Best Foreign-Language Film. Most recently it won a best director award for Šulík at Slovakia's national The Sun in a Net awards. The film stayed on the Czech box office top 20 for three weeks.
