PRAGUE: The Czech, Slovak, Polish, Israeli coproduction In the Shadow directed by David Ondricek dominated the 20th anniversary edition of the Czech Lions at Prague’s Lucerna Hall on 2 March 2013.

In the Shadow won Lions for best film, best director, best script, best cinematography, best music, best editing, artistic design, best sound and best actor.

The film which is set in 1950’s Prague is a dark drama about a police detective who starts to uncover deeply buried secrets of the Communist party while investigating a seemingly ordinary crime. In The Shadow was the Czech nomination for this year’s Oscars and also dominated the prestigious Czech Critics awards in Prague earlier this year. The film which was released theatrically at the end of 2012 by Falcon in the Czech Republic had nearly 200, 000 admissions and was screening in the Berlin Film Market earlier this year.

The Czech Lions are organized annually by Petr Vachler’s Vachler Art and draw a glittering crowd of the Czech Republic’s leading stars but a face that was sorely missed was former president Vaclav Havel who often attended the awards up until his death at the end of 2011.
