Czech cinematography will once again be represented at the Marché du Film film market in the Czech/Slovak pavilion, which the Czech Film Center shares with the Slovak Film Institute. The pavilion is located in a prestigious part of the Village International market under number 131 and is used as a space for the presentation of Czech films, cinematic news, co-production opportunities with Czech producers and services provided to foreign film crews as well as facilities for Czech producers that can meet foreign professionals in its spaces. The partners of the pavilion are Barrandov Studios and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
Cinéfondation, an official competition section of the Cannes IFF that presents student films from all over the world, will be screening a total of 18 films and has also selected a Czech film. Retriever, a short film by FAMU students Tomáš Klein and Tomáš Merta, is the story of Milan, whose wife and son have left him and he takes back at least the last reminder of a functioning family, a retriever named Goldy. Goldy becomes the companion to Milan’s life, soul and mind.
Jan Macola, the founder of the Prague production company Mimesis film, which produced Petr Václav’s The Way Out, the winner of a number of Czech Lion awards, was chosen this year for the Producers on the Move programme organised by European Film Promotion, of which the Czech Film Center is also a member. The programme, which takes place as part of the Cannes IFF, is meant for 20 selected beginning European producers and its goal is to help them in the search for partners for their further projects. The project with which Jan Macola will be participating in the program is Il Boemo, about the life of composer Josef Mysliveček, which will be directed by Petr Václav and which follows the already completed documentary Confession of the Vanished.
Another important programme for film professionals as part of the film market in Cannes is the Producers Network, to which around 500 producers from all over the world are invited. The objective of this special meeting is to strengthen the opportunities for international co-productions. Each day of the week-long programme is dedicated to a different country. This year the CFC also managed to arrange for a special day for the Czech Republic. Five producers will be presented at this time: Kristína Hejduková for Sirena Film, Petr Tichý for Barrandov Studio, Jiří Konečný for endorfilm, Karla Stojáková for Axman Production and Pavel Strnad for Negativ Film.
There will be a special projection of seven Czech films for foreign distributors and sales agents as part of the film market Marché du Film: Aferim! (Rumunsko, Bulharsko, ČR), Goat (SR, ČR), Ghoul (ČR, USA), Honey Night (Macedónie, ČR, Slovinsko), Šiška Deluxe (Slovinsko, ČR, Makedonie), The Snake Brothers and The Wilson City (ČR, SR).
