The CZK 20 million (800 000 euros) film, which combines thriller, psychodrama and criminal genres, is a co-production between Infilm (www.infilm.cz), Czech producer Tomáš Hoffman's company Infinity (www.infinity.cz), TV Nova (www.nova.cz) and distribution company Bontonfilm (www.bontonfilm.cz). Biermann produced Hřebejk's last drama, Kawasaki´s Rose, which premiered at the 2009 Berlinale film festival and recently opened in US distribution, hoping for an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
"Its not a story only of crime and punishment, but also a story of love and one big family," Hřebejk said. Hřebejk and Biermann are hoping to offer Innocence to the Berlinale film festival competition again.
The story centers on a respected family of doctors which faces legal accusation against one of its members. The cast is headed by Czech actress and Shooting Star Anna Geislerová and Ondřej Vetchý, while 77-year-old Czech actor Luděk Munzar returns to the screen in the role of a family doyen. "His character is very important for the whole storyline," Hřebejk said of Munzar, who suffered a serious disease several years ago which led to his retirement.
