Karlovy Vary film festival East of the West competition film The Collectress

By Aukse Kancereviciute

Lithuanian director Kristina Buozyte's debut film and film school graduation project, The Collectress, makes its international premiere in the East of the West competition at the 43th International Karlovy Vary Film Festival. The film, which has already been commercially screened in Lithuania's main cities, premiered at the International Film Festival Kino Pavasaris and won the Silver Crane award for best feature film in Lithuania.

The Collectress (www.collectress.lt) was produced by the film production companies TREMORA (www.tremora.com) and Reflex AG (www.reflex.lt) in collaboration with the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. TREMORA, an independent production company, focuses on full length feature and short films by young authors. The focus of studio Reflex AG is to create feature and TV films, advertising, computer-based graphics, and animation.

The film was sponsored in part by the Lituuanian Culture and Sport Support Foundation (www, ksrf.lt), which contributed €6,000, and the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, which contributed €4,500. The entire film budget amounted to less than €14,500 (50,000 Litas). The film was shot in 30 days, at 24 locations, with 70 participants involved in the shooting process. Originally shot on digital camera, the film was transfered to 35 mm for the Karlovy Vary festival, with the cost covered by the Lithuanian Ministery of Culture. The film is distributed by TREMORA DVE-Acme Films.

Prior to The Collectress, Buozyte made a number of short films, and worked as an assistant director and set up director for several Lithuanian and foreign films. Her short film Change the Record participated in the Rotterdam film festival HotSpots programme.

The question, "Why we are so much emotional when we are watching films - then we laughing, crying, trembling?" inspired the young director to make a film. The story focuses on its heroine, Gaile, who after an unfortunate accident notices that she's unable to feel any of human emotions. One day while preparing video material for her job as children's doctor she accidentally discovdrs that at the small period of time when she‘s watching herself on a video monitor she can get her emotions back. All she needs is to put on video simulated situation designed for the desirable emotional state: laughter, crying, anger. Thus begins an attractive experiment with unattractive consequences.
