Local films from Central and Eastern Europe picked up the largest number of prizes. Gypsy directed by Martin Sulik scored big with a Special Jury Prize as well as a Special Mention for actor Jan Mizigar and two Non-Statutory Awards. It was a welcome return to the screen for the well loved Slovak director who has not made a film in a number of years. The film was produced by Rudolf Biermann's In Film Praha.
Nicky's Family, a Slovak film directed by Matej Minac won the Pravo Audience Award selected by over 70 000 audience ballots which augurs well for its future box office success. The new FEDORA international critics' award for best film in the East of the West competition section went to the Croatian film Marija's Own directed by Zeljka Sukova. Polish director Martin Koszalka won the prize for best short documentary for his film Declaration of Immortality.
It was the first edition of the festival under the artistic direction of Karel Och who took the helm from KVIFF veteran Eva Zaoralova who looks intent on carrying on the festival's tradition of attracting young audiences.
