PRODUCTION: Estonia Marks Film Centennial with Mega-Film

By Martin Aadamsoo

TALLINN: The Estonian NGO Cinema Bus (www.kinobuss.ee), which tours the country with film and animation workshops and screens films in rural areas, has initiated an ambitious project to produce a feature film with 10,000 volunteers from across the country. The project, defined as a sci-fi documentary, is a mixture of guerilla film-making and community activism and is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Estonian film in 2012.

Preparations for production began late in 2010. The script was put together through a public contest for ideas, with three professional scriptwriters - Peep Pedmanson, Aina Järvine and Margit Keerdo - acting as supervisors and final writers. Most of the crew are volunteers, supervised by professionals. Shooting will take place in August in all regions of Estonia and the premier is scheduled for 11/11/11.

The film is shot with amateur cast and has no predesignated director, who will be selected from among volunteers. The story is set in Estonia on the eve of the Doomsday. All characters are busy doing what they think is appropriate, given the timing.

The reported budget is 320,000 EUR, financed by Estonia's public broadcaster ETV (etv.err.ee), Tallinn 2011 European Capital of Culture initiative, the Estonian Film Foundation (www.efsa.ee), Estonian Ministry of Culture, Estonian Culture Endowment and Estonian Gambling Tax Fund. Estonian TV will air the film on 1 January 2012 to kick-start Estonian film's centenary year. The film is produced by Cinema Bus.
