Estonia Sees Best Box Office in Decades

    TALLINN: Estonia recorded its best box office in decades in 2015 with 18% gross growth and almost 20% admissions growth compared to 2014.

    Admissions were 3.01 m in 2015 compared to 2.6 m in 2014, while admissions per capita rose from 1.97 in 2014 to 2.36 in 2015. Market share of domestic film admissions reached the highest level since 2007 with 11.3%.

    The box office reached 15.5 m EUR compared to 12.75 m EUR in 2014, with domestic fair accounting for 1.4 m EUR. A total of 279 films premiered in 2015, with the average ticket price climbing a few percent up to 5 euros.

    Two Estonian coproductions, Elmo Nüganen’s 1944 (Estonia's Taska Film in coproduction with Finland's MRP Matila Röhr Productions) and Margus Paju’s Secret Society of Souptown (Estonia’s Nafta in coproduction with Finland’s Solar Films Inc) got into top ten with 115,000 and 90,000 admissions, respectively.

    63% of the box office went to Hollywood movies, with European films making up 23% of admissions in addition to domestic films.
