Admissions to domestic films increased from 4,506 in 2016 to 71,509 in 2017 and domestic box office increased from 11,455 EUR / 36,430 GEL in 2016 to 180,675 EUR / 574,547 GEL in 2017, according to the information provided by cinemas.
Total admissions increased by 12.42 percent from 1,149,668 in 2016 to 1,292,496 in 2017. Total gross increased by 8.8 percent from 3,062,226 EUR / 9,737,881 GEL in 2016 to 3,331,711 EUR / 10,594,843 GEL in 2017.
The most successful Georgian films in cinemas in 2017 were: Hostages, directed by Rezo Gigineishvili and produced by 20 Steps Company, with 35,249 admissions, My Happy Familly, directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross, and produced by Germany’s augenschein Filmproduktion GmbH in coproduction with Georgia’s Polare Film Llc and France’s Arizona Production, with 14,209 admissions, and The Confessions, directed by Zaza Urushadze and produced by Estonia’s Allfilm in coproduction with Cinema24, with 10,366 admissions.
A total of 208 films were distributed in Georgia in 2017, of which 19 were domestic films, compared to 2016 when 198 films were distributed in cinemas, of which 10 were domestic films.
