Written by Karen van Holst Pellekaan and Marnie Blok, Kenau tells the story of Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer, a brave woman from Haarlem involved in the defense of the city against the Spanish invaders in 1573. Hungarian cinematographer Mátyás Erdély (Delta, Before Dawn) is the DOP. The film is scheduled to shoot for 45 days, with 35 of them taking place in Hungary.
Kenau is a Dutch-Belgian-Hungarian coproduction between Fu Works, Prime Time, and I’m Film. The project is supported by The Netherlands Film Fund, CoBO, NCRV, Ministry of OCW The Netherlands, Dutch Film Works, Eurimages, MEDIA, the Hungarian Film Fund, Belgian Tax Shelter and Hungarian Tax Shelter. Kenau received a production grant of 190,000 EUR/56,640,000 HUF from the Hungarian Film Fund (www.filmalap.hu) in December 2012. The budget is 6 m EUR, representatives of Fu Works told FNE.
The premiere is set for February 2014. The film will be distributed in Benelux by Dutch Film Works.
