His father is producer Aron Sipos, the head of Focus Film (www.focusfilm.hu), and his cousin Kornel Sipos is also a producer as the head of Laurin Productions (www.laurin.hu). Gabor wanted to be a producer from his childhood, because he saw how exciting filmmaking is in the family. Sipos received his diploma from Eotvos Lorand University in English and Italian, and started to work in commercials in 1997 and produced his first films in 2003.
Laokoon Film (www.laokoonfilm.com) was established in 2002 under the leadership of Sipos and Gabor Rajna. In the last seven years the company produced more than 100 national and foreign commercials. They also make short films, feature films and documentaries.
Sipos moved into the spotlight in 2007 at the Berlinale as a young producer with the debut feature film Happy New Life which received the Manfred Salzgeber Award - Special Mention. The two Laokoon producers won the producer's prize at Hungarian Film Week for Happy New Life (www.laokoonfilm.com/boldogujelet) directed by Arpad Bogdan and Slow Mirror directed by Igor and Ivan Buharov. In 2008 Sipos co-produced Panic (www.panikfilm.hu), and followed with three more films: the first feature film winner Intimate Headshot by Peter Szajki, the Hungarian-Polish coproduction from director Pater Sparrow 1 (winner of 5 Hungarian Film Week awards), and Transmission by Roland Vranik.
Coming up next, Sipos is co-producing Kornel Mundruczo's The Frankenstein Project with Proton Cinema (www.protoncinema.hu). At EFP's Producers on the Move, he is represented by Arpad Bogdan's next movie The Necromancer. The movie will be made by Laokoon Film with the estimated budget 1 million euro. Both movies are in preproduction.
Speaking of his selection for EFP's Producers on the Move, Sipos told FNE said that he is excited to take part because of the learning process as well as the chance to meet interesting colleagues and build a network which can be useful for the future.
Looking ahead, Sipos told FNE that he wants to make independent quality pictures -- though he won't mind mind if he wins a Cannes prize or gets the Oscars. He's confident about the future of the Hungarian film industry. In his words, "We can't do anything else than to be confident. And we're doing this to make it better."
