The budget for the film is 400-440 million HUF (1,432,000-1,575,000 Euros) half of which is already in place, producer Gábor Kovács told Magyar Film (www.magyar.film.hu). The success of Hajdu's previous film guarantees funding support of 25 million HUF (90,000 Euros). In addition, the Hungarian Motion Picture Association is funding 100 million HUF (358,000 Euros). Hungarian private TV channel TV2 (www.tv2.hu) and other private investors are also behind the project. As the film will be shot in Hungary, a 20% tax reduction will be applicable.
The film is about an African football player in a small Hungarian town who has to flee after committing a crime. He finds refuge on a farm which turns out to be a modern slave camp deep in the Hungarian flatland. He is forced to fight for his freedom and ultimately his life. Mirage is intended to shed light on the serious problem of how Hungary and Hungarians treat people from different cultures.
"My goal is to make a film that combines my exploration of these typically Hungarian issues with elements of a classic noir thriller and the classic western," says Hajdu.
Mirage is co-written by Hajdu and Jim Stark, producer of several Jim Jarmusch films. Shooting is scheduled in the summer of 2011.
