A celebratory gala for the Polish Film Awards (www.pnf.pl ) was held 19 March at the National Theater in Warsaw. The members of the Polish Film Academy had decided, that a moving drama "Rose" directed by Wojciech Smarzowski was the best film of the year. The title had also won Polish Eagles for the Best Directing, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Script, Best Sound and the Audience Award. The script of "Rose" follows the years following the Second World War, the indigenous inhabitants of the Mazurian lakes region became second class citizens to the new authorities. Through the eyes of a Polish Army office, we follow the struggle of a nation doomed to annihilation by two conflicting nationalisms. It would seem that these hard times leave no room for love. But love comes and brings hope. The film was produced by WFDiF (www.wfdif.com.pl ) and co-produced by Lightcraft Warsaw (www.lightcraft.pl ), Oko Film Studio (www.sfoko.com.pl ), Perspektywa Film Studio (www.studioperspektywa.pl ) and Tor Film Studio (www.tor.com.pl ). Wojciech Smarzowski’s film premiered in Poland on 3 February 2012, distributed by Monolith Films (www.monolith.pl ).
The runner up for the number of prizes won during the gala was Polish Oscar candidate "In Darkness", directed by Agnieszka Holland. A moving war drama produced by Studio Filmowe Zebra (www.zebrafilm.pl ) had won Polish Film Awards for Best Actor,Best Supporting Actress and Best Cinematography. Two Polish Eagles each were given Jan Komasa's "Suicide Room" ( (Studio Filmowe KADR, www.sfkadr.com ) - Discovery Of The Year, Best Editing) and Lech Majewskis "The Mill and The Cross"( Angelus Silesius Society) - Best Costumes, Best Set Design. The award for Best Music was assigned to an accomplished Polish music compser Michał Lorenc for his score to the movie "Black Thursday" (NORDFILM www.nordfilm.pl ).
Polish Eagles for the Best Actor were awarded to Robert Więckiewicz for his performance in "In Darkness", one of the highly praised roles of the year. Best Actress of the season 2011/2012 in Polish cinema is Agata Kulesza, who was awarded for her role in Smarzowski's "Rose". Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards were also assigned to performances in these two titles - to Jacek Braciak for his role in "Rose" and King Preis for her work in "In Darkness".
The members of the Polish Film Academy had decided to award an accomplished Polish filmmaker Janusz Majewski with a Lifetime Achievement Award. During the gala he name of the new President of the Academy was announced - Agnieszka Holland will be replaced by a renowned Polish film producer, director and screenwriter Dariusz Jabłoński.
