FESTIVALS: 52nd Krakow Film Festivals Announced Competition Films

{mosimage}KRAKOW: 42 titles representing three film genres: documentary, feature and animation will be competing for a Golden Dragon statue and 30k PLN in the International Short Film Competition of the 52nd KFF (www.krakowfilmfestival.pl).

This year's edition of the feature competition is a special occasion to become familiar with the cinema of this genre, represented by outstanding and award-winning directors of the younger generation, however not only, as Denis Tanovic, the famous author of "No Man's Land" will join the competitors. We will see an array of stars such as Gerard Depardieu, Michael Fassbender, Melissa Leo, Julia Louis Dreyfus and Liam Cunnigham on screen. In the auditorium we will see the authors of the screened films and winners of the most important international film awards, such as Oscar, Emma, BAFTA and the French Cesar.

The documentary part of the competition look equally as interesting and varied.

After last year's competition where the winners included an animated documentary, a documentary animation and a feature film which pretended to be a document, at this edition we will also see films which do not stick to the tradition - says the festival director, Krzysztof Gierat. After the Berlin success we will see a documentary musical "The Man that Got Away". The short documentary will take us to different parts of the world where unusual stories take place - states the festival director.

Fans of animated films will have the chance to see the latest films of the genre from the entire world, this time with a strong stress on the Estonian school, its subject and aesthetic variety.

Apart from the main award, the Golden Dragon, the Jury will also grant three prizes equal to the Silver Dragon for the best film director of a documentary, a feature and an animation.

46 of the latest productions will take part in the Polish competition at the 52nd KFF. The winner will be awarded a Golden Hobby Horse and 20k PLN.

The submissions for the competition included documentaries (short, mid and full-length), animated (up to 30 mins) and feature films (up to 30 min). The productions which have not been distributed in Polish cinemas so far and had not been presented at any festival before the 52th edition of the Krakow Film Festival had the priority in selection.

A lot of our directors work abroad now. This is the first observation looking at the selection of Polish films. Just like last year, surprisingly, a lot of films is being created somewhere in the world. Russia and the post-soviet areas are the favourites, however a lot of film-makers choose more exotic areas. They must have been jealous about the “Argentinian lesson” by Wojciech Staroń and “Phnom Penh Lullaby” by Paweł Kloc and therefore they did not listen to the call saying “go back to the country” – comments festival director, Krzysztof Gierat.

The Polish representation in the international competitions will constitute of six titles. Four of them are excellent documentaries: "Vera Gran" by Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz, "Dad Went Fishing" by Grzegorz Pacek, "Entangled" by Lidia Duda and "Stars" by Adam Palenta. The remaining two is a feature film from the communist times "A Porter From 'Mewa' Hotel" by Michał Janow as well as the animation by Piotr Szczepanowicz "The Railway Watchman".

Films which will be screened in a block out of the competition “Panorama of the Polish Film” have been chosen from the films which have not qualified for the competition.
