FESTIVALS: New Horizons Hosts Polish Days Pitching Session

    WROCŁAW: Seven new film projects at various stages of development were showcased during Polish Days at the T-Mobile New Horizons festival (www.nowehoryzonty.pl) underway in Wrocław.

    The pitched titles presented a broad spectrum of both local and internationally coproduced titles currently in development. The showcased titles included feature films and documentaries.

    The Mute

    The Mute is a drama written by Bartek Konopka, currently in the treatment stage of production. The script follows a story two missionary monks who jointly work to convert the pagans to Christianity. When two men take control of a pagan community it becomes apparent that their approach to faith and moral stands are different.

    The film will be produced by Anna Wydra and her company Otter Films (www.otterfilms.pl) with a budget of 2 m EUR. The production is planned to be completed in spring of 2014. The project has received 66,000 EUR in development financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl), 37,000 EUR from the MEDIA Development programme and 5,000 EUR from the Polish Audiovisual Center (FPCA).

    Dark Matter

    Dark Matter is a new film from Andrzej Żuławski planned as a fusion between film noir, mystery and science fiction. The script follows events occurring after the death of Corti, an important entrepreneur from Lyon, who dies in his bed surrounded by his loved ones. His son Anthony comes back home to see his father one last time and renews a relationship with his old close friend Raoul. Anthony tries to continue his father's dealings in business but while he is immersing himself in his father's world he finds out that there is a dark mystery hidden behind his success.

    The film is a Polish-French coproduction between Fondivina Films (France) and Metro Films (Poland) with a planned budget of 4 m EUR (2.8 m EUR financing is already in place ). The film is in preproduction with a completion date planned for May 2013. The producers are Marc Guidoni and Marcin Wierzchosławski.

    Hoang Means Yellow

    The film is a part animated documentary portrayal of Piotrek, a Vietnamese boy who was born in Vietnam and then travelled to Poland with his uncle, who married a Polish woman. When their marriage dissolved the woman adopted the boy and raised him as a Pole, outside of his culture and apart from his relatives. The director Paweł Ziemilski accompanies Piotrek on a journey to Vietnam, which he decides to take after reuniting with his step-sister and other members of his family.

    The film is in the shooting stage, produced by Studio Filmowe KADR (www.sfkadr.com) with a planned budget 106,000 EUR. The executive producers are Magdalena Kondrakowicz and Błażej Dziaduszycki.

    The Here After

    Seventeen-year-old John has just been released from jail after having served a juvenile sentence for murdering his girlfriend. He returns home to his father who has done everything he can to set up a new beginning for his son. However, when John accidentally encounters the mother of his dead girlfriend it becomes impossible for him to ignore the fact that his crime is still fresh and raw in the local community. The script was developed at EAVE 2011 and the Wajda School's EKRAN Programme 2011 (www.wajdaschool.pl).

    The film is directed Magnus von Horn and produced by Lava Films Ltd.(www.lavafilms.pl). The film is a financing stage of production, with a planned budget of 1.5 m EUR (with 250,000 EUR financing in place). The producer is Mariusz Włodarski and completion of the project is planned for 2012.

    Traces


    Traces
    is a fiction hybrid following the life of Vera who lives a vagabond life as a singer, but things crack apart when she goes home to Poland for her estranged mother's funeral. She retraces a mysterious journey of three sisters who in 1981 travelled alone from Gdańsk, Poland to Mombasa, Tanzania. The heroines leave their respectable lives, husbands and children, and at considerable risk set off on what they thought would be a four-month journey to Africa.

    The film is directed by Wiktoria Szymańska and produced by an UK based company Luna W (www.lunaw.org.uk)  with a budget of 980,000 EUR (200,000 EUR in financing in place from private investors). The project is in development with a completion date planned for 2013. The producers are Tine Fisher and Wiktoria Szymańska.

    Demon


    Demon is a tragicomedy following the life of a small town criminal, Python who forces the purchase of a piece of land in a good location in a small town. A dealership of used cars and his new house is to be set up there and he intends to finally settle down, hoping the new business will allow him to work legally and enter the bright side of life. At the same time preparations for his wedding with the daughter of a local gang leader are underway. Just before the ceremony begins, Python suddenly feels a strange weakness ("something inside him is crying") and is not able to take part in the wedding. A priest reveals that Python has been possessed by the spirit of a dead Jewish girl.

    The film is in the advanced development stage, directed and produced by Marcin Wrona. The film is produced by Magnet Man with a budget of 1.3 m EUR (670,000 EUR financing in place). The project is planned to be completed in 2013.

    The Sound of Nature- The Nature of Sound

    The documentary focuses on the figure of Jeph Jerman, an experimental musician living in Arizona who has a passion for sounds. Jeph discovers the world through sounds. He has completely immersed himself in listening to sounds which are ignored by most of us. Jeph composes symphonies using only sounds which surround us.

    The film is directed by Jacek Bławut and produced by Studio Filmowe Rabarbar (www.studiofilmowerabarbar.com) with a budget of 120,000 EUR (with 60,000 EUR financing in place). The title is in the preproduction and funding stage with a completion date planned for 2013. The producer is the Anna Bławut-Mazurkiewicz.
