Katarzyna Rosłaniec, one Poland's most popular filmmakers, debuted with Mall Girls, exploring youths offering sex for shopping with a cast of young, amateur actresses. For Baby Blues the director sought out new faces all over the country with the help of MTV and Vica Polska. From a group of over 6,000 candidates, the filmmakers chose a 17-year-old Magdalena Berus for the lead. She and her screen partner Nikodem Rozbicki received glowing reviews after the Polish premiere in January. The production won the Crystal Bear for best film in the generation 14 plus section at the 63rd Berlin IFF and Berus was chosen best actress at 10th Neisse fest (www.neissefilmfestival.de).
The shoot took place in May and June 2011 in Warsaw, produced by MD4 in co-production with Zentropa International Poland, Telekomunikacja Polska and Warszawa Powiśle with a budget of 6.2 million PLN (EUR 1.5 million) including a 3.5 million PLN in financing from the Polish Film Institute. The film enjoyed a strong opening weekend with over 130,000 tickets sold and had had audiences of over 424,000 to date. Baby Blues is distributed by Kino Świat.
