Polanski’s appearance had not been officially announced in advance by the festival organisers as his visit was not 100% confirmed until the last minute. It was an emotional moment as the Polish director who had left communist Poland for the West in the early 1960s was applauded on the Gdynia stage. Polanski who graduated from Poland’s prestigious Lodz Film School also gave a master class for film school students during his visit to Gdynia.
The general level of the main competition was very high this year and the jury headed by Janusz Glowacki decided to split a number of awards and give additional special mentions among the 15 Polish films competing in the main competition. It was the first Polish language film for Polish born Pawlikowski who lives abroad and who made his reputation working in British television. Ida also scored prizes for best acting and best cinematography. Polish Minister of Culture Bogdan Zdrojewski was also on stage for the closing ceremony which was held for the first time in the newly reconstructed Gdynia Musical Theatre. The seaside event was shifted from the early summer date it has occupied for the past three years to September because of the construction work on the venue but Gdynia fest artistic director Michał Chaciński the fest may be staying with the September date next year.
