KRAKOW: Poland’s Alvernia Studios is partnering on the international coproduction Magnitude 9, a modern version of the Madame Butterfly story, which will be shot in Japan in 2014.

Magnitude 9 is an unusual love story set in 2011 Japan during a powerful earthquake. The script was written by Agnieszka Vosloo who will also direct the film. Stanisław Tyczyński, the head of Alvernia Studios, and Brett Ratner, founder of US based Rat Entertainment, are coproducing.

"Magnitude 9 is one of the most interesting scripts that I've read in the last couple of years. It combines a wonderful love story set to a natural disaster and shows the road that one has to cross to find love," Ratner said.

The title will be the second feature from Vosloo who debuted with the psychological thriller After Life starring Christina Ricci and Liam Neeson in 2010. The musical score will be created by Oscar winning Polish composer A.P. Kaczmerk. Casting calls for Magnitude 9 are taking place, led by Kerry Barden, Paul Schnee and Rich Delia, responsible for casting hits such as David Fincher's Seven. The shoot will take place on location in Japan in 2014. The budget has not been disclosed. The project is coordinated by Anna Różalska from Alveria Studios and John Cheng and Katarzyna Nabiałczyk representing Rat Entertainment.
