Kino Polska celebrates 10 years on the market

By

WARSAW: Polish channel devoted to local productions with a special focus on classics started its broadcast on 20. December 2003.

Kino Polska, one of the most popular Polish commercial stations, was created in 2003. A channel that would reconnect the Polish audience with locally made classics and best Polish productions was the idea of Grzegorz Molewski and Joanna Molewska, who created the first team of the station in June of 2003. "Back then we already had a feeling, that we are creating something unique. The archives were full of classic films in copies that were slowly getting destroyed by time. By the end of the 90's the mass audience didn't know the tradition of Polish cinematography. The most notable characters of our cinema, who shaped the taste of our parents or grandparents, were not presented anywhere (...) Our vision for Kino Polska was to make classic Polish cinema present in the social consciousness and show that it can bring out universal emotions" said Joanna Rożen-Wojciechowska, the current program Director of Kino Polska ,who was a part of the original team.

The station's program offer is built around showcasing cinema classics from the most prominent Polish filmmakers such as Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Zanussi, Janusz Morgenstern, Agnieszka Holland, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Wojciech Marczewski, Juliusz Machulski, Tadeusz Konwicki and Jerzy Skolimowski. Screenings of full feature films, documentaries, shorts and productions for children are accompanied by originally made programming devoted to Polish cinema.

In 2008 Telewizja Kino Polska Publishing House was created in order to meet the need for DVD's with the station's offer, that has been expressed by the viwers. On 10th June 2013 Kino Polska TV S.A. , the owner of the station, became the majority shareholder of a popular Polish film themed newservice Stopklatka.pl

In January of 2010 the channel was the most watched film-themed station for the first time and has kept the leading position ever since. In the fall 2013 the station received a prolongation of it's broadcasting concession for the next 10 years. This year Kino Polska, that holds 0.7% of the market, joined Agora and Stopklatka.pl to create a new channel Stopklatka.tv. The station, planned as an innovative hybrid channel focused on cinema content, has received a license to start broadcasting in 2014.
