Warsaw 44 Dominates Polish Box Office

    WARSAW: With over 400,000 tickets sold in its first week of release, the WWII drama directed by Jan Komasa Warsaw 44 is positioned to be a front runner for the number one box office spot of 2014.

    The film opened on 19 September and sold 191,900 tickets during the opening weekend. Distributor Kino Świat informed FNE that the movie sold 441,837 tickets within the first week of its premiere. Komasa's drama surpassed big Hollywood titles and remains number one at the Polish box office. Admissions for Warsaw 44 in the first week are also more than the total number of tickets sold for all films released during the 12-18 September week which was 350,000. Currently the Polish box office hit is Władysław Pasikowski's spy thriller Jack Strong (Scorpio Studio) with 1,172,530 tickets sold since it opened on 7 February 2014.

    The movie was produced by Akson Studioin coproduction with Telewizja Polska, Orange Polska, Narodowe Centrum Kultury, Mazowiecki Instytut Kultury, Mazowiecki Fundusz Filmowy, and Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego. The main sponsor of the film is ING Bank Śląski. The film received 6 m PLN in production financing from the Polish Film Institute. The film also received support from Miasto Łódź and The German-Polish Cooperation Foundation.
