The committee, headed by filmmaker Robert Glinski considered over 30 titles for the Academy Awards competition.
Tricks, like last year's nominee Katyn by Andrzej Wajda, is a picture that gained international recognition before its Oscar nomination. Its successful distribution in 25 countries is seen as increasing its chances to receive an Oscar nomination. The simple story of a six year old who thinks that he can bribe faith with good deeds in order to get his father to return home has captivated critics. The movie won over 30 prizes at international film festivals, including awards for the Best Film and the Best European Film in the Giornate degli Autorisection during Venice Days 2007, the Jury's Special Prize in Mannheim-Heidelberg 2007, and the Jury's Main Prizes at festivals in Miami, Odessa, Angers, and New York.
