By

The Era New Horizons International Film Festival, in Wroclaw, Poland, came to a close on July 29. The international jury composed of Ron Havilio, an Israeli film director; Marina Fabbri, an Italian film critic, and Marion Hänsel, a Belgian film director, awarded the main prize of €26.5 thousand to an independent feature titled Raj za daleko (Paradise Too Far), directed by Radoslaw Markiewicz.

Six feature films were premiered in this section of the festival.

The jury also awarded Ballada o Piotrowskim (Ballad about Piotrowski) by Rafal Kapelinski. This Polish director permanently residing in England won the independent section of the Gdynia film festival last year with his film Emilia placze (Emily is Crying). He produced the Ballad about Piotrowski at his own expense, for about
40,000. Starring in this simple story from the life of a little town, Nieszawa, are the renowned Polish actors Krzysztof Kiersznowski and Zbigniew Zamachowski. The independent cinema was also represented by the experienced independent director Piotr Matwiejczyk. His Na boso (Barefoot) portrays the environment of a teenager who attempts a suicide.

Some more experienced filmmakers presented their latest films too. Leszek Wosiewicz, the director of such films as Kornblumenblau showed his newly-finished Z milosci (Out of Love). The project was carried out using an experimental method: no ready-made screenplay, just an outline of the plot. The producer is Odysey films, a company set up by Wosiewicz.

Stanislaw Mucha, known for his documentaries, brought to Wroclaw Hope by Krzysztof Piesiewicz's screenplay, already shown in Karlovy Vary Film Festival (more about Hope can be found here), while Tomasz Wiszniewski showed Wszystko bedzie dobrze (Everything Will Be OK). The film was produced by Studio Filmowe Zebra (
