Regional Film Funds Institution launches first major project in Poland

By Katarzyna Grynienko
Silesia's Regional Film Fund, Silesia-Film, will grant €296,000 (PLN1 million) for scripts thematically linked with Silesia and for productions that bring business to the local film industry. Selected films can apply for funding of up to 50% of their budgets, with Silesia-Film becoming a co-producer.

The Regional Film Funds were recently introduced as a way to expand government funding sources. Each fund focuses upon a particular region for financing and promoting local film production. The funds were in response to Polish Film Institute's director Agnieszka Odorowicz, who insisted that local authorities become more active in funding regional audiovisual projects. A project similar to Silesia-Film (www.silesiafilm.com.pl) is expected to launch soon in Lodz, the region of Poland that has the largest film industry.
