{mosimage}Rose looks at events that took place following the end of World War II, when the people of Masuria were deemed "unfit" to build the new, better society as envisioned communist regime in Poland. Told through the eyes of the Home Army officer, Smarzowski shows how the local people had to struggle -- not against any person, but with two contrasting ideas of nationalism in their own country. The circumstances seem unsuitable for new love to flourish, but the characters in Rose experience it regardless of their situation.

Shooting took place in Masuria between June and September 2010, following the changes of seasons. Rose is produced by the Documentary and Feature Film Production Company (WFDiF,www.wfdif.com.pl) in co-production with Studio Filmowe TOR (www.tor.com.pl), Studio Filmowe Perspektywa (www.studioperspektywa.pl), Studio Filmowe OKO (www.sfoko.com.pl) and Lightcraft Warsaw (www.lightcraft.pl). The budget of the film was 6.6 million PLN (EUR 1.6 million) with 3.4 million PLN (EUR 860,000) in financing from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl).

{mosimage}Smarzwoski is an acclaimed Polish film and theater director, best known for is feature debut The Wedding (2004) and his recent film House Evil (2009). The Wedding is considered one of the best Polish dramas of the last decade, awarded at several local and international competitions including the Special Jury Award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia (www.fpff.pl), the Polish Eagles (www.pnf.pl) for Best Script, Best Film and Best Director as well as Directing awards at the Karlovy Vary and Locarno festivals. House Evil was also well received in Poland, earning the director Best Script and Best Director prized in Gdynia 2009 and the Polish Eagles Audience Award the same year. The critics associated with the Polish Filmmakers Association (www.sfp.org.pl) and FIPRESCI selected it as the best Polish film in the 2009/2010 season.

The script was written by Michał Szczerbic and the cinematographer is Piotr Sobociński jr. The producer is WFDiF's Director Włodzimierz Niderhaus. The lead characters are played by Michał Dorociński and Agata Kulesza, with Kinga Preiss, Marian Dziędziel, Jacek Braciak, and Eryk Lubos. Rose will receive its world premiere in Gdynia, with theatrical distribution planned for fall 2011. The Polish distributor of the film is Monolith Films (www.monolith.pl). The producer told FNE that the company is planning to distribute the film abroad.
