With a growing list of international correspondents the international competitive event for TV programming and the TV market FIPATEL supported by CNC and MEDIA is one of the most important in Europe for the TV industry with nearly 1300 participants present. It is also one of the only chances for independent TV producers and commissioning editors to see their work projected on a big screen with a live audience present.
This year for the first time a TV film from Bulgaria was in competition, the Golden Rose Prize winner No1 directed by Atanas Hristoskov and produced by Bulgarian National Television (www.bnt.bg) as FIPA continues to reach out to its neighbours.
Teresa Cavina in her third year as FIPA artistic director told FNE said: "FIPA is a pathfinder with a mission to look at the state of creation in European television. The difference between cinema and TV today has become much less than it used to be. The main difference is that cinema is a shared experience with an audience, technically there is very little difference between TV and cinema." This year works created for the web was a competitive category for the first time.
The growing emphasis on coproductions in TV was reflected in the 6 edition of the FIPA coproduction pitching sessions. From more than 300 projects in development submitted the producers of 12 docs and two fiction series were selected to attend a training workshop and then to have the chance to pitch their projects to top European TV commissioning editors. Martine Scoupe head of the FIPA two day coproduction event told FNE: "About 25 to 40 % of the projects end up finding partners and getting produced so it is a very good rate of success." The coproduction section is open to all countries and this year Hungarian producer Judit Stalter from Lackoon Film (http://www.lackoonfilm.com/) was able to pitch
her new project Besence Open in Biarritz.
Jean Michel Ausseil, Secretaire General of FIPA who has been with FIPA since its inception told FNE: "FIPA is about convincing TV professionals and audiences that television productions can be as interesting as film. We believe that audiences can be offered anything provided you dare to present audiences with works which daring, creative, which are totally different than what they are used to seeing. Works that are different from what TV audiences are used to seeing in their own countries. We give television professionals the chance to see their work with an audience. We challenge professionals that if they dare to produce quality television that is different the audience will accept it."
FIPA is a bastion of quality European television production and hosts competitions in the categories of One Off Drama, Series, Creative Documentaries, Reportages, Performing Arts and Web Creations. Here are this year's FIPA prize winners.
