MOSCOW: Turkey scored big at the 35 Moscow International Film Festival (20-29 June 2013) (MIFF) with Turkish director Erdem Tepegoz taking home the main prize for his film Particle and Turkish actress Jale Arikan winning a Silver George for her role in the film.

Particle which is a debut from the director is a social drama about a young single mother living in a fringe neighbourhood in Istanbul with her young daughter and her elderly mother.

The jury was helmed by Iranian filmmaker and human rights activist Mohsen Makhmalbaf.

In the documentary competition Polish director Pawel Lozinski won the main prize for his film Ojciec I Syn / Father and Son about the prominent Polish film director his father Marcel Lozinski and himself.

The film closed with a screening of Rasputin director Irakli Kvirikadze with the newly minted Russian actor Gerard Depardieu in the leading role of the mad monk. The festival opened with World War Z and an appearance from its star Brad Pitt.

Depardieu turned up at the festival to promote the film despite being involved in a car crash earlier in the week. The 64 year old actor is currently shooting a film title Turquoise on location in Grozny and Moscow together with Elizabeth Hurley who plays his girlfriend in the film.

With Russia now in the global top five territories for box office the Moscow festival is increasingly seen as a launch-pad for big name films and has no trouble attracting A-list stars.
