Fatih Akin’s The Cut, an ambitious coproduction between Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Canada, Poland, Turkey, will screen in the main competition of the festival. Dealing with the killing of Armenians by Turks in 1915 which has controversially been labeled as genocide in some countries the film was shot in Jordan, Cuba, Canada, Malta and Germany.
Georgia has scored two slots in the Orizzonti programme of the festival with Salome Alexei’s Line of Credit and Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s The President both screening in the official line-up. The Croatian director Ognjen Svilicic’s These are the Rules will also screen in Orizzonti. In the short film section Orizzonti Romanian director Adrian Sitaru presents his new film Art.
Screening in the Critics Week is the Italian, Argentinian, Slovenian coproduction Dancing with Maria directed by Ivan Gergolet and coproduced in Slovenia by Staragara.
The festival will also feature the third edition of the Venice Film Market (28 August-2 September) under the direction of Pascal Diot, hosting producers, distributors, buyers, sellers, agents and film promotion agencies.
This year the VFM will launch the first European Gap Financing Co-Production Market which will take place on August 29th and 30th presenting 15 European projects which have secured at least 70% of their financing. Among the projects from CEE to be presented are Dawn, a Latvian-Estonian coproduction directed by Laila Pakalnina, Yesterday by Balint Kenyeres a coproduction between Hungary, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, Il Rumeno by Catalin Mitulescu a Romanian, Italian, Swedish coproduction, Peace To Us In Our Dreams by Sharunas Bartas a Lithuania French coproduction and Stage Fright by Yorgos Zois a coproduction between Greece, Croatia and France.
