Director Danis Tanović took home a Sliver Bear for the Grand Jury Prize for Death in Sarajevo, a coproduction between Bosnia and Herzegovina and France as well as the international critics FIPRESCI prize for best film. The Polish competition entry United States of Love, a Polish/Swedish coproduction directed and scripted by Tomasz Wasilewski, scored the prize for Best Script.
A group of 20 international critics participating in the daily FNE FIPRESCI Critics in Berlin rated the films in the Main Competition, Panorama and Forum sections of the festival giving the highest rating to Berlinale Golden Bear winner Fire at Sea. To see the full table of ratings click HERE.
Films in the region for young audiences which won prizes included Special Jury Prize Generation Kplus for Best Short Film for the USA/Cyprus coproduction Semele directed by Myrsini Aristidou and Crystal Bear for Best Film from the Youth Jury for Mellow Mud (Latvia) directed by Renārs Vimba. Mellow Mud participated in the B'EST development workshop in 2012. More recognition for films for young people went to Zhaleika (Germany, Bulgaria) directed by Eliza Petkova and A Night in Tokoriki (Romania) directed by Roxana Stroe, while Europa Cinemas jury bestowed a Special Mention on On the Other Side (Croatia, Serbia) directed by Zrinko Ogresta.
Tagesspiegel Readers’ Award went to Czech director Petr Vaclav’s We Are Never Alone a Czech/French coproduction. CICAE Art Cinema Prize in the Forum section of the programme went to Romanian director Adrian Sitaru for the Romanian/Polish/French coproduction Illegitimate. Looking towards the future Amrion (Estonia) new project The Little Comrade to be directed by Moonika Siimets and produced by Riina Sildos received a special mention from the Eurimages Coproduction Development awards.
This year there was also a special emphasis on refugees during the festival with star George Clooney and his wife Amal, who is a leading human rights lawyer, meeting German leader Angela Merkel to discuss the migrant crisis in Europe during the festival. Clooney was in Berlin for the premiere of the new Coen brothers film Hail Caesar! which opened the festival. The festival also hosted a number of activities aimed at refugees including sponsoring visits to the festival for refugees and raising 25,000 EUR in donations from festival visitors in refugee aid.
