The 2016 LUX Prize winner tells a story about a father and daughter trying to reconnect in tragicomic circumstances, set against the backdrop of contemporary European society. Toni Erdmann prevailed over two other finalists, As I Open My Eyes by Leyla Bouzid and My Life as a Courgette by Claude Barras.
Polish MEP and Member of the Committee of Culture and Education Bogdan Wenta, who was present at the ceremony in the European Parliament on 23 November, said to FNE “The most important thing about the prize is audience building. The winner will be translated into 24 languages. Without translation to the European languages a film cannot gain new audiences. People in Europe have to see European films as an alternative to US blockbusters.”
