Opening day admissions reached 10,000, making it the best opener of the 2009 season and proving once more Czech loyalty o local production.
The 2009 chart topper to date, You Kiss like a God by director Marie Poledňáková (www.libasjakobuh.cz), remained in Czech cinemas for almost 30 weeks, with admissions of 900,000. However, Czech Oscar hopeful, the war drama Protector by director Marek Najbrt (www.protektor-film.cz) is faring poorly. After four weeks in cinemas, Protector has attracted only 45,000 viewers and 5.4 million crowns (207,000 Euros) in box office according to the Czech Union of Film Distributors (www.ufd.cz).
Grapes 2 expects a record admissions. "After these first figures from a domestic box office chart, we are quite sure that our film will fulfil its reputation as this autumn smash hit in Czech cinemas," said Adam Dvořák, general director of production and distribution company Bioscop (www.bioscop.com), which produced both Grapes and Grapes 2.
The first Grapes movie attracted 30,000 admissions during its first weekend and surprising 360,000 in total admission in 2008.
The newest "wine comedy" by director Vlad Lanné and screenwriter Tomáš Holeček had a budget CZK 25 million (1 million Euros). Shooting ended in July, taking place primarily in the vineyards of South Moravia, where the story of two young wine-growers is set. The film was produced by Dvořák, but also Tomáš Vican, a well-known Czech wine merchant and wine events producer.
Grapes 2 brings back the cast of the first movie: popular young Czech actors Lukáš Langmajer and Kryštof Hádek (Dark Blue World) along with Lubomír Lipský, Miroslav Táborský, Marian Roden and Václav Postránecký.
