FNE at MIFF: Taboo - The Soul Is Stranger on Earth

By Iulia Blaga

Christoph Stark is in competition at Moscow IFF with Taboo - The Soul Is Stranger on Earth/Tabu - Es ist die Seele ein Fremdes auf Erden, the haunted love story between the Austrian poet Georg Trakl and his sister Margarete (Grete).

Born five years apart, they shared the same ideas on life, art and self-destruction. Their impossible love grew from their mutual feelings that they were both different from the others, and their ultra-sensitivity found shelter in one another. When Georg Trakl killed himself in 1914, at age 27, she survived him only a few years, shooting herself in 1917.

"It was one of the best scripts I ever read," producer Arno Ortmair told FNE. "The writer has created the most impossible love story of two young people who survived a harsh childhood by clinging to each other, but when they became adults they were not allowed to stay together because of the moral rules. Five producers had tried - unsuccessfully - to make this movie."

FNE at MIFF: Taboo - The Soul Is Stranger on EarthTaboo- The Soul Is Stranger on Earth/ Tabu - Es ist die Seele ein Fremdes auf Erden is a coproduction between Austria, Germany and Luxembourg. The script was written by Ursula Mauder, and the film stars Lars Eidinger and Peri Baumeister, in a cast that includes Rainer Bock, Rafael Stachowiak, Petra Morzé and Jules Werner.

The film is a production between Film-Line Production Munich (www.filmline.de), Eclypse Film Vienna (www.eclypse.at), Iris Productions Luxembourg (www.theirisgroup.eu), ARD Degeto (www.ard.de) and Bayerischer Rundfunk (www.br-online.de). The producers are Arno Ortmair, Nicolas Steil and Dieter Pochlatko.

The film received supported from the German Federal Film Fund - DFFF (www.ffa.de), FilmFernsehFonds Bayern - FFF Bayern (www.fff-bayern.de), Österreichischer Rundfunk - ORF (http://orf.at), Filmfonds Wien (www.filmfonds-wien.at), Österreichisches Filminstitut - ÖFI (www.filminstitut.at), Filmstandort Austria (www.filmstandort-austria.at) and Film Fund Luxembourg (en.filmfund.lu).

The budget was 4.3 million euro.

Ortmair told FNE, "The most difficult part was to find a new approach, to convince the financiers and distributors because they have been afraid of the subject, and also to find the right director and the perfect cast."

Shooting took place in Vienna and Luxembourg in July and August 2010. The film is set to be released in Austria next winter. There is no sales agent confirmed. The film used the working title Forevermore.
